Akmola Province
Akmola Province (Kazakh: Ақмола облысы, Aqmola oblısı Russian: Акмолинская область, Akmolinskaya oblast) is a centrally located province of Kazakhstan. Its capital is Kokshetau. The capital of the whole country, Astana, is enclosed in the province, but is politically separate from Akmola Province. The province's population is 748,300; Kokshetau's is 124,000. The area is 146,200 square kilometers. It and Karagandy Province are Kazakhstan's only two provinces which don't touch the country's outer borders. As well as Karagandy Provinceto the south, the Akmola Province borders the North Kazakhstan Province to the north, the Pavlodar Province to the east, and the Kostanay Province to the west. Some gold and coal mining occur in the area.
Etymology
Aqmola or Akmola in Kazakh language means the white burial.
Demographics
Ethnic Kazakhs account for 43.5% of the population in 2009 census, compared to 36.5% for Russians.[2]
